How Should You Dress Your Kids For Fall Family Photos

As a Northwest Arkansas photographer, I hear all of the time that dressing your family for your photo session is one of the biggest pain points when preparing for family photos. Finding the right photo-friendly pieces, then coordinating everything together can feel overwhelming. I get it!

That’s why all of my Family and Newborn Photography clients receive complimentary outfit planning so you don’t have to stress about what to wear. Incredible, right? Send me an email if you’d like to know more.

I know that not every client of mine is having me plan their outfits, and there are others that aren’t my clients or live outside of Northwest Arkansas. That’s exactly why I’ve put together this curated, shoppable list of some of my favorite clothing picks for kids that are perfect for family sessions.

This list will be ever changing, so be sure to check back as we get closer to Fall!

WHERE I LIKE TO SHOP FOR PHOTO-FRIENDLY KID OUTFITS:

FAVORITE FOOTWEAR FOR KIDS:

For babies, I love having them barefoot to get those sweet little baby toes. Depending on the terrain and temperature outside, I even like older kids to be barefoot when it feels right. Generally – leather sandals, neutral canvas sneakers (not tennis shoes), loafers, and simple boots are great for boys. Leather sandals, Mary Jane’s, and ballet flats are great for girls.

THINGS I LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING PIECES:

  • Soft textures (muslin, cotton, linen, waffle knit, corduroy, ribbed, soft flows fabrics) that bring great visual interest to photos
  • Neutrals, soft tones and light colors, earth tones – always photograph best!
  • Avoiding saturated and bright colors as they cause weird skin coloring
  • Limited/No logos and NO graphics
  • When it’s cold – adding a cardigan, button down over a t-shirt, lightweight fashion jacket
  • Moveable! We want our kiddos comfy and unhindered by what they’re wearing to avoid fussiness
